Nervous About Your First Appointment?

If the thought of a dental appointment makes your stomach tighten, you are in ordinary company — and you do not need to explain yourself to us.

Somewhere between one in three and one in five adults report meaningful anxiety about dental care. A smaller group avoids it altogether for years. Almost none of them are being unreasonable. Most anxiety traces back to something specific: a painful experience as a child, a dentist who did not stop when asked, a lecture about neglected teeth, or simply the helplessness of lying back while someone works on your face.

None of that is a character flaw, and none of it is something we need you to get over before you come in. It is information we can work with.

What actually happens at the first visit

The first appointment is a conversation before it is an examination.

The most common fear we hear is not of pain. It is of being judged, or of being talked into something. So the first visit is deliberately low-stakes.

  • We talk first, sitting up. Before anything goes near your mouth, we want your history, what has gone wrong before, and what you are hoping to avoid.
  • The exam is diagnostic, not corrective. Digital scans and images, a look at your teeth, gums and bite. Nothing is treated on the spot unless you are in pain and want it addressed.
  • You leave with a written plan, not a decision. Options, sequence, and cost, in writing, to take home. There is no pressure to book treatment before you leave.
How It Goes
Three stages, and one thing that will not happen
The sequence we follow for every new patient. If you are in pain, we will address that first.

Tell us what you are afraid of

Specific fears have specific workarounds. Vague reassurance does not.

Vague reassurance is useless. Specifics let us change what we do. The needle, the drill sound, gagging, numbness, not being able to speak, the smell — each of these has a workaround, and we use them daily.

  • A stop signal. Raise your hand and we stop, every time, no matter where we are. Patients who know they can stop something rarely need to.
  • Narration, or none at all. Some people want every step explained. Others want to hear nothing about it. Tell us which you are.
  • Headphones, a blanket, a morning slot. Small things, and they work. Anxiety is usually worst after a day spent anticipating.
  • Topical before the injection. Numbing gel first, slow delivery second. Most patients who dread the needle do not feel it.
  • Sedation, if you want it. From mild oral sedation that takes the edge off to deeper options for longer appointments.
If It Has Been Years

We are not going to lecture you about the gap. Patients who have avoided the dentist for a decade are among the most common people we see, and the visit that ends the avoidance is the one that matters. Call 770-995-0538 and say you are nervous — it changes how we schedule you.
