Endodontic therapy, also known as root canal therapy, is a standard dental procedure that saves millions of natural teeth every year. During this procedure, the infected pulp inside your tooth is removed, and then the cavity is cleaned, filled, and sealed with a crown.
Dr. Craig Fisk, DDS, at Above and Beyond Dentistry in Lawrenceville, Georgia, recommends you follow these tips to quickly recover from a root canal procedure:
Many times, patients are unaware of what a root canal procedure consists of. Since every patient’s recovery is different, clear communication is necessary for effective treatment.
You may need clarifications on your symptoms and what to expect after the procedure. We are always happy to answer all your questions.
Since your tooth has just undergone a dental procedure and is still healing, it is important not to subject it to unnecessary pressure. Avoid eating immediately after the procedure. For at least one or two days, you should stick to softer foods and avoid eating anything too hot or cold, or foods that are sticky and crunchy.
You won’t experience any pain during the root canal procedure. However, you may feel some discomfort after.
For any temporary pain or discomfort after a root canal, the dentist will recommend over-the-counter painkillers or anti-inflammatory medication.
This is our favorite tip! Eating ice cream helps reduce inflammation and minimizes the risk of infection. Remember, do not eat ice cream on the side where the root canal procedure was performed.
Although you can get back to school or work after your root canal, it’s best to give yourself a break from strenuous activities for at least one day. This includes activities like playing sports, going to the gym, hiking, or running. Rest is the best way to ensure a fast recovery.
While recovering from your root canal procedure, it is important to avoid habits and foods that may cause inflammation. You should quit smoking, use a straw while drinking, and avoid cold or hot beverages. To prevent infection, rinse your mouth twice a day with warm salt water.

I had some bad dental experiences as a child and didn't go to a dentist for 10 years because of my fear. Dr. Iskol is very patient and understanding, and now I no longer fear going to the dentist. The front office staff is great too!
Had my first visit and they lived up to their reviews! Great staff, great Doctor. Got a lot to do but they didn't make me feel overwhelmed. I'm just relaxing and going for the ride.
I feel like family when I come to receive my treatment. I never experienced any problems with customer service from my hygienist down to the receptionist. Dr. Iskol and his treatment plan has help me regain my smile. Thank you!!
