Why whiten and brighten, enhancing your smile?
At times we notice staining or discoloration of our teeth. This causes our smiles to seem duller or not as bright as what we would like them to be.
Discoloration of teeth can be caused by genetics, antibiotics, and certain foods. Our smiles often tend to darken as we age as well. Basically, anything that can and will stain a white t-shirt will stain our teeth over time. It is also possible that there is internal tooth discoloration caused by changes in the enamel of the tooth and the dentin. The possible causes of internal tooth discoloration are exposure to high levels of fluoride, tetracycline, having high temperatures/fevers as a child, use of antibiotics as a child, developmental disorders, tooth decay, restorations, root canal issues, and trauma.
Tooth whitening can last for one or more years, depending on your personal daily habits. Smoking, teas, wine, and sodas can cause staining to appear on your teeth. It also depends on how well you take care of your teeth and if you’re following up regularly with one of our wonderful hygienists. It is best to have a regular cleaning; this helps to remove a “film” that builds upon our teeth. After cleaning, it is typically easier/quicker to whiten and brighten your smile.
